Learn how you can use your email program to quickly convert files into different formats. The file conversion is almost instant and works even on a mobile phone.

There exist quite a few online services that let you convert files from one format to another. You upload the source file, specify the output format and within seconds, the converted file in the desired format becomes available for download. That’s easy but there are somes limitations with this approach:

When you want to convert a file, you have to upload it to the file conversion service. This is not an issue when you are converting files from the desktop but how do you upload files from iPhone, Android or any other mobile browser.Sometimes clients will send you files in obscure formats as email attachments. In order to convert those files in a format that your apps can understand, you will download the attachments to your desktop and then upload them to the file conversion service. That’s work.

Zamzar, a popular tool for converting files online, has added a new option that lets you convert files by email itself. You can forward your email attachments directly to Zamzar, without downloading them to the desktop, and they’ll be converted in no time.

To get started, you need to forward the input (source) files to a specific email address like format@zamzar.com where format represents the file type of the desired output format.

For instance, if you have a Word document that you want to convert to PDF, you can send the file as an email attachment to pdf@zamzar.com. If you have a PDF file that you want to convert into an ebook, the corresponding conversion address would be epub@zamzar.com or mobi@zamzar.com depending on your ebook reader.

Here’s a complete list of input-output file formats that are currently supported by Zamzar. You can convert documents, presentations, ebooks, videos, audio files, archives and more.

In my test, the converted files were delivered quickly and the quality of the converted files was impressive. There’s no need to create any account at Zamzar and you can convert files up to 1 MB in a single batch. You may go for a pro account to convert bigger files that starts from $7 per month.

One more thing. You can only upload files by email and initiate the conversion process but you’ll still have to visit the Zamzar website to download the converted file. It stays on Zamzar servers for about a day and their download page is actually very confusing when accessed on a mobile phone.

Create Collages and Friends with your Facebook Photos

Create beautiful photo of collages with your own Facebook photo albums or using pictures of your friends.

The team behind Shape Collage, a popular photo collage software, have launched Loupe, an online tool that will help you create collages using Facebook photos.

You can either use your own photo albums and turn them into collages or the app can also pull photos from the albums of your Facebook friends that are visible to you.

It takes just a few steps to build your first collage. Authorize the app to access your Facebook account, then select any of your photo albums (or that of your friends), choose a shape and your collage is ready. Hit the Share button to save that collage to your Facebook account or grab the permalink to share it by email.

The collages look impressive and if you don’t like the default layout, you can always move or delete any of the pictures on the pile. Here’s a quick video that shows how you can turn Facebook albums into collages.

The drawback though is the resolution. Loupe generates a relatively small image of your collage that will probably look good only on a mobile screen. Shape Collage says that will be introducing higher resolution images in the future.

Any photo collage that you create with Loupe is public and currently there’s no option to change the visibility to private. Thus, if you have any private photos on Facebook that you don’t want the world to see, it may not be a good idea to turn them into collages because others may then find them through search engines.

Not Just Email Addresses, Credit Card Numbers also Stolen from Microsoft India Store

The Microsoft Store in India website was hacked and credit card numbers, email addresses, shipping address and other personal details of customers may have been leaked online.

If you ever used your credit card to shop at the Microsoft Online Store in India, it may be a good idea to stop everything you’re doing and call your bank to get your credit card blocked. That’s because your credit card number, your address and everything else that a fraud needs to use your credit card online, could later become available in the underground market.

The story so far..

Earlier this month, the Microsoft India Store website was hacked and Microsoft, the following day, sent out an email saying that email addresses, passwords and shipping address of users may have been stolen. The email also said that payment information was not exposed to hackers.

We have confirmed that databases storing credit card details and payment information were not affected during this compromise. However, exposed account details may include non-financial related information including e-mail address, password, order details and shipping address.

The Microsoft Store was hacked more than two weeks ago but the website is still down indicating that the impact was much larger than they initially imagined.

Latest update..

And it is. Microsoft sent another email this morning confirming that hackers may have stolen credit card details of customers as well.

Further detailed investigation and review of data provided by the website operator revealed that financial information may have been exposed for some Microsoft Store India customers.

Microsoft had outsourced their online store to an advertising and digital marketing agency called Quasar Media and this company was probably storing customers confidential data in plain text inside a Microsoft Access database that hackers got hold of.

This is extremely disappointing.

Get Form Data from Google Docs in an Email Message

This video tutorial explains how you can send form data from Google Docs in an email message using the very useful Send Mail function of Google Docs.

Whether you are looking to add a basic “Contact Me” form to your website or need to create a complex online poll with conditional branching, Google Docs is an excellent tool for you. It offers a variety of themes, data can be easily exported and, unlike other polling software, your Google Docs forms can accept any number of responses without the fee.

There’s one limitation though. Google Docs can send email notifications as soon as people submit your online form but, as shown in the above screenshot, there’s no form data included in that email message. You’ll have to open the corresponding Google Docs spreadsheet to see that actual form data which is not always a very convenient option.

Should you wish to receive Google Docs form data in an email message as soon as a user submits the form, there’s an easy workaround as explained in the following video.

The trick is that you associate a send mail routine with your Google Docs form that triggers as soon as a “form submit” action happens. And this routine, written using Google Apps Script, does all the magic – it reads the form values that were just submitted and sends them all in one message to a pre-defined address.

Here’s how you can add email capabilities to your Google Forms step by step:

Create a new form in Google Docs (or use any of your existing forms) and switch to the Spreadsheet view.Go to Tools –> Script Editor and copy-paste the following code in that code editor window. To explain this further, users will be enabled to assign contact icons, message alert to each SIM independently. With this smartphone, you can manage your business activities from one SIM and keep in touch with your loved ones using other.

The smartphones comes pre-installed with premium applications like SRS Tru Media Audio enhancement, PicSel Smart Office and Ignition Remote Access. These software allow the users to edit Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents and they can viewed and edited in the cloud as well. The Ignition Remote Access feature of the phone allows the users to control a PC through the device’s UI itself.
That's not all. You can also print documents directly from your phone to any wireless printer. This helps in reducing the pairing and cabling costs through Access points or routers. ViewSonic 4S will feature a 8.9-cm (3.5-inch) multi-touch display with ‘super clear’ 960 X 640 resolution IPS panel at 326ppi and 800:1 contrast ratio. This makes the device provide life like image with details. It also has a 5 MP AF camera and a front VGA camera for video calling. The company has not disclosed any details about the storage and processor but what one can guess is that it will be powered by a 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor with 4 GB internal memory and a microSD expansion slot.
The device is likely to be launched in Q2 2012 in Europe. It is expected to be priced at $499.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012: Google chairman Eric Schmidt aims to take Android to every human being by next year. According to the latest estimates, as many as 850,000 Android devices are activated everyday globally. The growth rate of Android is fast and if the company gets it right, there will be an Android in every pocket by 2013. In December, this figure of daily Android activations was 700,000 devices per day, up from about half a million in June last year.

Delivering a keynote address at Mobile World Congress, Schmidt indicated the possibility of Android coming to the low-cost phones. When a journalist asked him about the availability of Android on the low-cost feature phones, he immediately answered, “Why not buy a smartphone?” He had a logic to support his answer too. He said, "A smartphone which costed $400 last year will cost $100 next year." He expressed that possibility of Android entering the lower markets as it evolves.

Schmidt made it a point to mention the growing markets as a part of its strategy. He said that Google will focus on the emerging markets with its strategy for Android. It includes running the Android operating system on cheaper and cheaper hardware.
