7 Reasons You Need To Blog For Your Business

If you are not blogging for your business then you should be. While many people simply dismiss blogging because of its description as a web diary they are missing a lot of traffic and revenue generating opportunities every day. Are you one of those missing out?

In truth blogs are much more than a simple web diary. They are actually a content management system and/or an easy web site template. Blogging software allows you to begin posting your content to the Internet in minutes and when you harness that ability with an RSS feed you have a powerful traffic magnet.

I have come up with 7 reasons why every business should have a blog and RSS feed.

1. Publishing a regularly updated blog helps you keep in touch with your existing audience and/or customer base. You can publish updates, news, or thoughts in your blog as well as answer questions.

2. A blog can help you attract new customers. Your blog entries (posts or articles) will become fodder for the search engines and will attract new visitors. If your blog answers the visitors question or attracts their interest you have just found another qualified lead.

3. Blogs and RSS feeds often rank higher in search engines than traditional web sites. Search engines love blogs and RSS feeds. If you design your blog properly then every time you update it the search engines are notified. Even if you don't regularly ping most search engines will revisit blogs more frequently. Plus the very organization of a blog lends itself to spidering and good search engine ranking.

4. Blogs can help you establish or build your reputation in a particular field. As your blog grows you will demonstrate your knowledge in your chosen niche.

5. Blogs and RSS feeds are good revenue streams. You can add pay-per-click ads, affiliate ads, or sell ad space on your blogs. In fact, many PPC companies also provide the ability to add PPC to your RSS feeds.

6. Blogs are great ways to generate leads. Even if you don't want to put any advertising on your blog you can use it to promote or capture leads for your own programs. These are great leads as the fact that they came from your blog means they are already interested in your topic and predisposed to your individual message.

7. Creating your own blog is the easiest way to establish a presence on the Internet and creating an RSS feed is even easier. In fact, it is also the cheapest way to get started on the Internet as there are a number of free blogging sites out there. I started out with http://blogger.com and usually recommend them but have heard others point to several other top blogging sites as well. The blogging software that I now use is WordPress and also happens to be free. In fact, most web hosts now offer WordPress (or other free blogging software) as a free site add-on through Fantastico. Installing WordPress from scratch is quick and easy but Fantastico makes it even easier. Blogs created at Blogger have an RSS feed created for them and WordPress also creates feeds in several variations automatically.

As you can see there are several benefits to starting your own blog and RSS feed. If you can count that many benefits from an Internet marketing technique that is also free and easy then you are foolish not to begin using it for yourself.

The Right Amount Of Computer Time

In a country that settles each night in front of the television, it just seems strange that more and more people are finding the allure of the computer screen sometimes more important. There is no doubt that children do as their parents do. They enjoy exploring the vast world of the Internet. They are excited to get that new computer game. But, how much time in front of the computer screen is the right amount of time?
There is no doubt going to be a number of people that come out and say that children are spending far too much time in front of the computer. They may end up telling us that their eyes will go back or something. Regardless of what they will say, we know now that it is important to limit the amount of time children use the computer. We know this because we know that it just makes sense that children who play on the computer too much loose the physical aspects of life along with the elements of pretend play that actually teach them quite a bit.
As parents, it is up to us to limit what the child is doing. It is up to us to provide for them something worthwhile to do while they are on the web as well. In this, we mean that you, Mom or Dad, need to commit to knowing which games they are playing and which websites they plan to visit. Here's a great way to limit what they are actually doing.
Instead of allowing them to surf and end up on some bad website out there, go ahead and download a game or two for them. Games that are available on the web are fun, but when the parent gets to do the picking, they can be fun and educational at the same time. Does your child need math help? Then go ahead and give them a fun math game that teaches what they need in an easy to get along with manner. This can be done for a number of subjects like spelling, science, history and language. By giving them a computer game like these, they can make their computer time, well, worth it in your eyes.
You would be surprised by how many parents simply say, "Yes, you can play on the internet." Many of them do not know what their child is doing let alone know that he or she is playing an educational game! Yeah right! Most kids are going to find and play a game that interests them with flashing colors and graphics. That doesn't mean that they won't like games that don't provide this element. But, the websites they tend to visit are full of advertisements that lure them in. Your job is to point them in the right direction.

So, back to our question; how much is the right amount of time for computer time for your child? Well, inside that question is the word, "your" and that means that it is at your discretion that you should consider their need. Balance their day with physical, emotional, pretend and all those other important educational elements then add in a little time for computer play. Believe it or not, they are building skills that they will need later in life too.

Change your Firefox skin to IE 9

Internet explorer 9 (IE9) is the latest version of internet explorer by Microsoft. But most of us still like using Chrome and Firefox because it makes browsing easier and smooth. Chrome is used more than Firefox, may be because it has minimalistic look with cleaner interface.
If you want to bring IE9 look to your Firefox, we can suggest you a tool known as FoxE9 which is a Firefox add-on. By installing this add-on you can change the interface of Firefox to internet explorer 9. It is actually the skin of IE9 for Firefox. After installing the add-on it changes location bar to match that of IE9 and animations offered by Firefox will be disabled when the title bar is maximized.
Whenever you want you can easily disable or remove the add-on to get the old look of Firefox. In my view, this add-on is too good and does exactly what it is supposed to do. After installing this you will hardly find any difference between your Firefox and the original Internet Explorer 9 UI.
Even though the developer has just released the first beta version of the add-on, but I can simply say that it is one of the well developed beta release I have ever seen because of the fact that this add-on is simply perfect. If you like the user interface of IE9 and want to make your Firefox look like IE9 then go ahead and try this “FoxE9” add-on. Moreover the IE9 skin only changes the look of Firefox and not its performance.

USB Plugin Problem and How to fix it

USB flash memory drives are “plug and play” devices that are generally simple to use for storing and retrieving anything from text documents to family photos and even video files. While they don’t usually have problems, a USB drive may occasionally experience issues if it isn’t removed from the USB port properly or if your computer is unexpectedly turned off while the drive is still being accessed. In these cases the data stored on your drive may become corrupted, or you may be unable to open the USB drive at all.
In most cases a corrupted USB drive must be fixed by formatting the device, but unfortunately this action also deletes all your stored data. For a shot at saving your files you should first check to ensure that the USB ports on your computer aren’t causing the issue. To check if the ports are the culprit you need to uninstall and then reinstall each of them through the Windows device manager tool.
Unplug the USB drive, if it’s still connected to your computer, and then open the “Start” menu and type the phrase “Device Manager” in the “Search” box. Open the device manager window by clicking the icon directly underneath the “Control Panel” heading in the search results. The device manager window is also accessible by navigating to the main “Control Panel” button in the “Start” menu, clicking “Hardware and Sound,” and then selecting the “Device Manager” link.
Opening The Device Manager
To locate your USB ports, expand the “Universal Serial Bus” heading located at the bottom of the device manager list by clicking the arrow icon to the left of the heading. Right-click the first entry in the expanded list and select “Uninstall” and then “OK.”
Uninstalling USB Ports
Repeat the process with each of the remaining entries in the Universal Serial Bus list to uninstall each of your computer’s USB ports. To automatically reinstall all the ports at once, click the blue icon at the top of the device manager window labeled “Scan For Hardware Changes.” Reconnect the USB drive to any of your computer’s USB ports and see if the drive is now working properly.
Scan For Hardware Changes
If the USB drive continues to malfunction, your next option is to format the drive and return it to factory settings. To locate the USB drive, click the “Computer” button in the “Start” menu.
Opening The Computer Window
Locate the name of your USB drive underneath the “Devices With Removable Storage” heading. Right-click the drive’s name and select the “Format” option listed directly above the “Eject” option to open a new window.
Opening The Formatting Windwo
If the “Quick Format” box is checked underneath the “Format Options” heading, click the box to remove the check mark. While the quick format option doesn’t take as long to complete, it isn’t nearly as thorough and may not fix all issues of corrupted data. Click the “Start” button at the bottom of the window to format the drive, which erases all the existing data and resolves any problems with the USB device.
Formatting The USB Drive
After formatting the device, be sure to always properly remove the drive from your USB ports to prevent any future problems from occurring. The Windows 7 operating system includes a feature to safely remove a USB device without any risk of lost data. While the drive is still connected to your computer, right-click the “Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media Icon” in the taskbar at the lower-right corner of your desktop. Click the option labeled “Eject” to ensure your computer’s operating system is no longer accessing any of the data stored on the drive and then unplug the device.

Linux Feeling on Windows

Those who wanted to use Linux on their computers for them we are going to tell about an application which will help you to get that Linux feeling on windows. This application will provide you a UNIX like environment on Windows operating system. UNIX is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system.
UNIX operating systems are widely used in servers, workstations, and mobile devices. The UNIX environment and the client–server program model were essential elements in the development of the Internet and the reshaping of computing as centered in networks rather than in individual computers.
The application is known as Cygwin. It helps you to run native Linux applications on Windows. It consists of UNIX system call libraries along with many GNU application. Compilers, development tools, development tool kits, GNU maces, TeX and Latex, OpenSSH (client and server), and much more are packed into different modules which can be downloaded and used on your Windows PC.
Cygwin creates an imitation of Linux which provides substantial ‘Portable operating system interface’ function and tools which makes the experience of using a copy of Linux on windows perfect. To get Linux on your windows follow these steps:
1. Download the required file from the link given below. Make sure that you have minimum disk space of 5 GB to complete the installation.

2. Run and start installing the application

3. While installation the setup process will ask you to choose the type of internet connection, select ‘Direct Connection’
4. When it asks for ‘selecting packages’ choose the applications you want. The applications or the packages can be selected just by clicking default label adjacent to the package name.
5. When you click next, the installation will begin. It will take around 30 minutes to complete the process depending on the downloading speed.
It is a free/open source. You can easily install compilers, SDK’s & tools on it. In clipboard integration it supports texts only. Remote clients can be launched and displayed in your Cygwin/X session either via telnet or via X11 tunneling over Ssh, using either Cygwin’s openssh package. Those who want to experience Linux this is the best application for them.

Today when I was surfing the internet and checking the updates on my FB wall I was surprised that suddenly and in mid of the session, my Facebook account just redirected and showed this message “Facebook Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few hours.”
I didn’t see this message earlier and also wasn’t aware of something like this. I tried refreshing the page or visiting the Profile link, but nothing happened. I also switched to another browser (I was using Chrome but later accessed FB in Firefox) but the result was the same. I thought if my account was hacked (for some seconds) but realized it should not be the case as I use safe internet practices.

What is Facebook Account Temporarily Unavailable message?
So if anyone of you had not come this message, so far, then you might be wondering what this message is. When this message appears, you won’t be able to access your account (for the obvious reasons) and will the something as shown above.
Why this message appear?
This message appears when FB is undergoing some maintenance and the same instant you are also using it. However I believe for the organization as big as it is, this problem should not occur at the very first place.
How to resolve this?
The message will disappear on its own and after some time you would be able to log in and use your Fb profile successfully. In my case, it solved after 2 minutes but this can vary too.
Did anyone of you, come through this problem?

For all those who take Photography as their passion and want to convert their old analog print photos in digital copies, we are going to tell how to do this in a proper manner. You must be thinking that why we came to this topic, since everyone of us know that it is usually done by scanning but if you don’t know how to scan correctly the quality of print will turn out to be poor.
Today this article will make you aware of those tools which we usually overlook and the methods of getting the best possible quality of your pictures. We will be starting out today with “Windows Fax and Scan” program which is included in Windows 7 (we are starting it with Windows 7, because most of us are having windows 7 only) that will help you to scan your photos even if you don’t have any other program installed to scan your photos.

We won’t tell you how to use “Preview” and “Scan” buttons because it is very common and everyone is aware of how to use these options. Put the Resolution at 300 DPI and keep in mind that “Black and White” is actually a single color mode. All the edges will be having a sharply uneven surface or outline. However this mode is good for drawings but not for photos, so use Color or Greyscale to fetch best results.

When you try to straighten your pictures, then the pixel value will get reduce which will result in loss of Resolution so it is advised to scan the images on square to the edge of the flatbed lip.
If you want to opt an advanced scanning then you have to install a scanner driver on your system. If you have installed a device driver then following points may help you in scanning an image with the best possible quality.
24 bit color is the best option you can have and scanning the image with the pixel density more than 300DPI is waste of time unless you have to enlarge the image. In your scanner driver there would be options for adjusting levels and saturation, adjust it as per your convenience. After scanning, save it as a JPG file.
This is the proper way of scanning your pictures. It is suggested to scan your images like this only. Most of us think that we should use Photoshop or GIMP but these software actually stretch and squeeze your images. It is better to scan by using a device driver and then improve the scan in Photoshop or GIMP.

The beta version of Windows OS has a Watermark of the build number and Release version name of the Operating system on the bottom right corner of the Desktop. It was there on Windows 7 and now can be seen on Consumer Preview of Windows 8 as well. This article will guide you on how you can remove this Watermark.
In Windows 8 the process of removing this Watermark is quite simple and will not let you mess up with the system files. The process is that whenever you set an image as Desktop wallpaper, Windows automatically creates a copy of that image file in a hidden folder and then puts the Watermark on that image file. So if you edit the image file, the Watermark will also get off from your desktop wallpaper.

To remove the Watermark, follow these instructions:
• Create a New Folder and save the image you want to set as your desktop wallpaper
• Set the image as your desktop wallpaper.
• Create the copy of that file.
• Now name the “CachedImage_1280_800_POS4.jpg”. Where 1280_800 represents your screen-resolution (screen resolution may subject to change, depending on your Monitor)

• Now open Run (Windows logo + r) and paste the following text:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes\CachedFiles\
• A folder named as ‘cached files’ will appear. You will be able to find your file.
• Minimize this Window and go to that folder you created in previous steps. Copy the image named CachedImage_1280_800_POS4.jpg to the Cached Files folder.

• A pop up Window will appear “Replace the file in the destination folder” option. Now refresh the Window for a couple of times by clicking the F5 key and then you can close that folder.
The Watermark will not be there on your screen anymore. However, if you again change your wallpaper you have to follow the same procedure. Also note that this method is useless if you are using a theme pack with multiple pictures.

For programmers or people who regularly require replacing text strings from multiple files, here is a tool which will help you to find text strings from multiple files to directories and sub-directories. The name of the tool is Replace-me. It is a useful tool which even helps you to change the command parameters.
Replace-me identify and replace text strings from files by using right-click context menu. To install Replace-me in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, follow these Terminal commands.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/nautilus-extensions

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install replace-me
After installation use the given command or log-off and then log-in again to refresh Nautilus.
nautilus –q
Now you can start using Replace-me. Replace-me works in the manner as shown in the adjoining image.
When you select ‘Replace string in files’ a pop window will appear and display the path of the selected file. Now enter the text that has to be replaced and the text you want to replace. As shown in the image given below. You can easily change the text within a document. It will itself find the location of the string and directly replace it.

Usage is very simple; just select the file or files you want to search the string to replace and clicking the mouse right button, so you’ll see the context menu. This tool will come handy if you wish to replace text without opening the file and just by using the right click context menu. [via]

Bing in Different Countries
So, say you want to view search results from a different part of the world – what’s the simplest way? Well, if you’re using Microsoft’s Bing search engine the answer is easier than you think! Follow along, and I’ll show you how to change it so you can search country-specific results!
First, browse over to Bing.com. In the upper right-hand corner you’ll see the option to sign in. Near that, you’ll also see United States (or the country in which you currently reside). Click on it.
On the resulting page, you’ll see a host of different countries to choose from. Simply select the one which you’d like to use as a search platform. I chose Japan.
When Bing redirects you back to the main page, you’ll notice that the background image has changed to reflect the country you’re searching in. Now, perform a search and check out the results. They should all be relevant to your chosen country!
To go back to your native country’s search platform, first click English, which is located in the upper-right, then click the country name to select your home country again.
Let’s hear it for country jumpin’!

Elaine from San Diego, Calif. asks:

I am currently in a job where I have to do a lot of copying and pasting images and text. My clipboard gets really full and I would like a way to clear it quickly. Do you know of any way to do this?

Yes, I do, Elaine, and you will be one happy camper when you get through with this article!

What we’re going to do is create a shortcut to clear your clipboard whenever you want (you can even drag it to the quick launch toolbar if you want to). For those of you who do a lot of cutting and copying and pasting of photos and such, this will help you, as well. When you are working with large files, you may or may not notice that your work speed decreases; if you clear your clipboard regularly, your work speed will increase by a huge amount.

image

Type the following command (including the quotation marks) into the box that pops up:

cmd /c “echo off | clip”

Then click Next.

image

Name the shortcut and type the name in the box. (Clear Clipboard came to mind for me.)

image

This is what mine looked like after I finished the steps above:

image

Now you can stop here if you want to. I always have to take things a little further just to have fun, so I went searching on the net to find another icon. You have to have .ico for an extension for Windows to recognize it as an icon, so I typed .ico icons http://www.google.com/search?q=.ico+icons&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a into Google and came up with a huge selection, including icon search engines. However you want to do it, make sure whatever you download and save has an .ico extension.

I hope that made sense. Back to business.

To change your icon, right-click on your current icon and select Properties.

image

In the box that pops up, you will see various tabs across the top. Left-click on the one that says Shortcut, then left-click on Change Icon. A new box will pop up; type the following in the box:

%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll

Since I don’t want the regular Windows icons, I need to Browse to go get the one I chose. Since I saved mine to my desktop, that’s where I will browse to.

image

Next click on OK, then Apply, then OK. And this is what my icon looks like:

image

Okay, but what if you don’t want to look for clipboard icons on the net? Maybe you want to choose from some that are already loaded into Windows. In that case, make sure the correct command is in the Browse box, and then just hit OK. Now the box is full of Windows icons.

Once again, make sure that the command I gave you above –

%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll

—is in the Browse box. If anything else is in there, you will not be taken to the icon folder. Only the command above will give you the Windows icons. If there is something different in the Browse box and you want the Windows icons, simply copy and paste (or type) the command above into it and hit OK. Your icon folder will pop up then.

image
image

And if you really want quick and convenient access (in addition to a tidier desktop), left-click your new icon and drag it to the quick launch toolbar.

image

There you go, Elaine! Not only do you have a quick way of clearing your clipboard, but you can customize it to your liking by making or changing the icon and even putting it in the quick launch toolbar for added speed and convenience!

Thank you so much for writing!

Photoshop Elements: Crop and Lighting
The first article in this series about Photoshop Elements was an overview of the Editor, with a look at the Quick Edit feature. This installment explores two editing basics in Full Edit; cropping, and adjusting light and contrast. By cutting away the unnecessary components in an image, cropping makes it possible to improve composition, fit to a particular ratio (5 x 7, 8 x 10, etc.), or both. Light and contrast can be adjusted on images, or on layers within images, so both crop and lighting tools are critical to many editing tasks.

Volunteer Match
Volunteer Match is an awesome site that matches people who are willing to donate their time by volunteering with organizations who are looking for volunteers.
This site came to my attention through a knitter I follow online who was disappointed that she had missed out an opportunity to knit for an organization that had a listing on this site. I poked around the site a little bit and knew that I had to share it with all of you!
The site is really easy to use, just type in your location into the search field (either the zip code or the city) or type a keyword into the second search box and then click the green Search button. It will then display either all of the volunteer opportunities in your area or all the opportunities for the keyword you typed in.
I put in my zip code and got six pages of results! There are plenty of volunteer opportunities out there if you go looking for them.
Are you running a non-profit organization? Do you need volunteers? You can register to use the site as an administrator and the post volunteer opportunities here too!
This site offers a great way to help you find ways to give back to your community. Check it out today!
