Bing in Different Countries

Elaine from San Diego, Calif. asks:
I am currently in a job where I have to do a lot of copying and pasting images and text. My clipboard gets really full and I would like a way to clear it quickly. Do you know of any way to do this?
Yes, I do, Elaine, and you will be one happy camper when you get through with this article!
What we’re going to do is create a shortcut to clear your clipboard whenever you want (you can even drag it to the quick launch toolbar if you want to). For those of you who do a lot of cutting and copying and pasting of photos and such, this will help you, as well. When you are working with large files, you may or may not notice that your work speed decreases; if you clear your clipboard regularly, your work speed will increase by a huge amount.

Type the following command (including the quotation marks) into the box that pops up:
cmd /c “echo off | clip”
Then click Next.

Name the shortcut and type the name in the box. (Clear Clipboard came to mind for me.)

This is what mine looked like after I finished the steps above:

Now you can stop here if you want to. I always have to take things a little further just to have fun, so I went searching on the net to find another icon. You have to have .ico for an extension for Windows to recognize it as an icon, so I typed .ico icons http://www.google.com/search?q=.ico+icons&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a into Google and came up with a huge selection, including icon search engines. However you want to do it, make sure whatever you download and save has an .ico extension.
I hope that made sense. Back to business.
To change your icon, right-click on your current icon and select Properties.

In the box that pops up, you will see various tabs across the top. Left-click on the one that says Shortcut, then left-click on Change Icon. A new box will pop up; type the following in the box:
%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
Since I don’t want the regular Windows icons, I need to Browse to go get the one I chose. Since I saved mine to my desktop, that’s where I will browse to.

Next click on OK, then Apply, then OK. And this is what my icon looks like:

Okay, but what if you don’t want to look for clipboard icons on the net? Maybe you want to choose from some that are already loaded into Windows. In that case, make sure the correct command is in the Browse box, and then just hit OK. Now the box is full of Windows icons.
Once again, make sure that the command I gave you above –
%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
—is in the Browse box. If anything else is in there, you will not be taken to the icon folder. Only the command above will give you the Windows icons. If there is something different in the Browse box and you want the Windows icons, simply copy and paste (or type) the command above into it and hit OK. Your icon folder will pop up then.

And if you really want quick and convenient access (in addition to a tidier desktop), left-click your new icon and drag it to the quick launch toolbar.

There you go, Elaine! Not only do you have a quick way of clearing your clipboard, but you can customize it to your liking by making or changing the icon and even putting it in the quick launch toolbar for added speed and convenience!
Thank you so much for writing!

So, say you want to view search results from a different part of the world – what’s the simplest way? Well, if you’re using Microsoft’s Bing search engine the answer is easier than you think! Follow along, and I’ll show you how to change it so you can search country-specific results!
First, browse over to Bing.com. In the upper right-hand corner you’ll see the option to sign in. Near that, you’ll also see United States (or the country in which you currently reside). Click on it.
On the resulting page, you’ll see a host of different countries to choose from. Simply select the one which you’d like to use as a search platform. I chose Japan.
When Bing redirects you back to the main page, you’ll notice that the background image has changed to reflect the country you’re searching in. Now, perform a search and check out the results. They should all be relevant to your chosen country!
To go back to your native country’s search platform, first click English, which is located in the upper-right, then click the country name to select your home country again.
Let’s hear it for country jumpin’!

The default video player app for Android is sweet, but it has a couple of drawbacks which can be very annoying at times. First, the default video player app can’t play all video formats. When you try to play .avi or .mpeg files, there is a high chance that you will see the error message – “Sorry, this video cannot be played”

OpenOffice Writer: Looking for Another Word to Use?
We all know that it’s not a good idea to overuse a particular word in a writing piece. We try not to, but sometimes that different word seems to elude us.
The question is what help does Writer provide for these situations?
The answer is that it provides quite a bit.
OpenOffice.org Writer, like many other similar programs, does have a thesaurus – and here’s how you can get a quick and easy substitute to avoid overuse.

Photoshop Elements: Crop and Lighting
The first article in this series about Photoshop Elements was an overview of the Editor, with a look at the Quick Edit feature. This installment explores two editing basics in Full Edit; cropping, and adjusting light and contrast. By cutting away the unnecessary components in an image, cropping makes it possible to improve composition, fit to a particular ratio (5 x 7, 8 x 10, etc.), or both. Light and contrast can be adjusted on images, or on layers within images, so both crop and lighting tools are critical to many editing tasks.

Volunteer Match is an awesome site that matches people who are willing to donate their time by volunteering with organizations who are looking for volunteers.
This site came to my attention through a knitter I follow online who was disappointed that she had missed out an opportunity to knit for an organization that had a listing on this site. I poked around the site a little bit and knew that I had to share it with all of you!
The site is really easy to use, just type in your location into the search field (either the zip code or the city) or type a keyword into the second search box and then click the green Search button. It will then display either all of the volunteer opportunities in your area or all the opportunities for the keyword you typed in.
I put in my zip code and got six pages of results! There are plenty of volunteer opportunities out there if you go looking for them.
Are you running a non-profit organization? Do you need volunteers? You can register to use the site as an administrator and the post volunteer opportunities here too!
This site offers a great way to help you find ways to give back to your community. Check it out today!
